About
The Cyprus Safety & Health Association
celebrates in 2006 its 15th Anniversary as it was founded in Nicosia -
Cyprus in September 1991. According to the Association’s constitution
its main purpose is " ... to contribute towards the efforts for
protection and promotion of safety and health at work and to the
prevention of risks concerning the public in general"
The founding members of the Association were
just twenty one (21). The number of members has recently increased to more
than hundred and fifty (150). The great majority of the members belong to
the private sector although a good number of Labour Inspectors are also
members.
President of the Association since founded and
until the 1st November 1997, was Mr. Achilleas Callimachos, ex Chief
Inspector of Factories and Director of Labour. Mr Athos Charalambous,
first Secretary of CySHA, succeeded Mr Callimachos, and the Presidency of
the Association as from January 2004 went to Mr Christophoros Theofilou.
CySHA as from 2003 is an active member of the
European Network of Safety and Health Professional Organisations (ENSHPO).
In February 2005, CySHA hosted in Limassol the 9th Meeting of ENSHPO that
dealt mainly with the issue of the mutual recognition of qualifications in
health & safety in Europe. The co – coordinator of the relevant Working
Party and the Treasure of the Network is CySHA’s ex President Mr. Athos
Charalambous.
During the fifteen years of its existence, CySHA
has to demonstrate a very rich action plan that contributed at most to the
upgrading of the health & safety standards in Cyprus.
It was just a year after it was founded that in
collaboration with the Cyprus Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, has
organised the then pioneer seminar " Health & Safety in the Services
Sector - towards Europe ". The organisation of seminars, conferences,
lectures and training activities and industrial visits has continued and
will continue with great success.
In September 2001, within the celebrations of
the 10th anniversary of CySHA, the 1st International Conference &
Exhibition on Safety - Fire - Environment - Security - Ergonomics ''SFESE
1'' was organised successfully in Nicosia. This international conference
has been now established as the ''SFESE 2'' and ''SFESE 3'' followed every
second year.
Further to the participation to the European
Network of Safety and Health Professional Organisations (ENSHPO),
CySHA has developed its international relations by establishing an
excellent collaboration with the Greek Association of Labour Inspectors.
This collaboration resulted in the co-organisation of three Hellenic -
Cypriot Conferences on Health and Safety at Work. Also, in September 2001
a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the Institution of
Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) of UK.
The Association has also succeeded to be
represented at two important advisory tripartite bodies for policy-making
issues. At the Pancyprian Safety and Health Council, operating under the
Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance as well as at the Pancyprian Road
Safety Council operating under the Ministry of Communication and Works.
In June 1994, the association published the
first edition of its official journal the " Safety & Health " The journal
has received a very positive criticism and continues its publication every
six months in 600 copies.
